Gerneration Y

Definintion - Millennials (also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Y) are the demographic cohort following Generation X. There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends. Researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.

While the members of Generation Z (anyone born after 1993) are beginning to show up on the radar screens of businesses around the world, Generation Y (people born in the '80s and '90s) is now firmly established in the workplace and a force to be reckoned with.
In her book, Knowing Y: Engage the Next Generation Now, marketing and media expert Sarah Sladek explains, "This tech-savvy, globally minded generation isn't joining, buying, networking, learning, or engaging like other generations."
Gen Y really is different. Here are some stats that help explain what makes the members of Generation Y tick:

  • 92 percent believe that business success should be measured by more than profit
  • 80 percent prefer on-the-spot recognition over formal reviews
  • 61 percent feel personally responsible to make a difference in the world
  • 50 percent want to start their own business, or have already done so
  • 2 years is their average employment tenure
According to Sarah Sladek, members of Generation Y...
1. Hate to be sold anything (How will this affect the way you sell your products and services to the members of Gen Y?)
2. Have always been rewarded for participation and not achievement (How can you inspire and motivate your Gen Y employees?)
3. Don't seek to acquire stuff (How can you pitch your products in a way that neutralizes this trait?)
4. Can self-organize friends for grassroots activism (How can you leverage this skill within your Generation Y employees to promote teamwork?)
5. Trust peers first and parents second (How can you build trust with the Gen Y members of your team?)
6. Actively research prices and read reviews before making a purchase (How will you ensure your product or service is the one that Gen Y customers decide to buy?)
7. Are driven by a desire to make a difference (How can you recruit and retain the best Generation Y employees?)
8. Expect exceptional service (How can your business deliver service that is consistently above and beyond your competitors?)
9. Seek to do business with ethical, trustworthy organizations (When it comes to being ethical and trustworthy, do you walk your talk?)
10. Value customization (In what ways do you enable customers to tailor your products and services to their unique desires and needs?)
11. Remain detached from institutions, but closely networked with friends (How effectively do you use social media to build and promote your brand and your products and services?)

Radio -  To a certain extent music does still define what type of person you are as most people have disagreements over what radio station you should listen to and it can cause differences between the generation

Levi Straus Binary Opposite theory

In Nostaligia, Strong vs Weak occurs as the majority of the characters are strong as they are healthy compared to the minority of one character being terminally ill.
Another Binary Opposite that links into the strong vs weak is life vs Death as Melody is terminally ill meaning she is facing death. Compared to

Roland Bathes Codes Theory

Roland barthes is a semiotician who came up with the code theory. There are 5 codes which are woven into any narrative.

The film Nostalgia has an element of the Hermeneutic code as it avoids telling the audience how or why melody is in the film. Another point where this code occurs is on the Nicole show where one of the members of the band walks off and the audience are unsure of the reason. This code occurs on the Nicole show when the audience don't hear the band members answer the questions asked because they see flashbacks instead. Another point is when the band member walks off the stage as the audience want to find out why he has which builds tension.
The semantic code is applied to the film Nostalgia as of the kiss, holding hands and giving of a present is a connotation of the two characters are in love.
From the connotations of love, on a wider level, shows how love affects people lives on a big scale.
Cultural code shows young people as being dramatic and don't want to face the truth. They are trying to mature by dealing with the issue of death. It also shows how young people are easily affected by love as they are considered reckless.

Dave Harrison

Youth are often represented in accordance with popular or hegemonic notions of adolescence (stereotypes) ''A period of storm to stress characteristics by interrogational'' E.G. Tracy Beaker, Skins, Waterloo Road, The inbetweeners,

Youth are often ‘demonised’ by the mass media I chose this article as this was based on the 2011 London riots which was highly discriminated against by the elder generations. It gave teenagers a bad name and 'demonised' us. This article make all teenagers look rebellious and violent when statistically it was only a tiny proportion of the population

Youth are represented as being let down by adults I chose this article as it explains why the youth of today are so rebellious The Archbishop says: “We have to ask, what kind of society is it that lets down so many of its young people? That doesn’t provide enough good role models and drives youngsters further into unhappiness and anxiety by only showing them suspicion and negativity?” This shows that adults as well as youths have realised that we grew up with them as role models and if we turned out bad it is partly their fault. E.G. Wild Child, Tracy Beaker, Roal Dahl, Harry Potter

Alienation – youth are represented as being estranged from parts of society, particularly adult society. I chose this article as it shows how society are slowly getting rid of everything 'youth centred' and it shows how they don't count youth as part of their society they are being pushed away and separated from the rest of society. E.G. Skins, ''Trust gap between old and young is widening'' - Gardian.

Youth are product of the society they were born into, and often embody the faults and fears of adult society. E.G. Gossip Girl, Pirates of the caribbean, attack the block, Supernatural.

Representations of UK Youth are often nostalgic and romanticized I chose this movie as it shows the craziness of being a teen and also the nostalgicness of  adults wanting to be young again, because in this case the protagonist gets to relive his teenage year and shows how perfect/unperfect teenage life is. E.G. The fault in our stars, Hannah Montanna, Love Rosie, One day, Freaky Friday,

Narrative and Story

Narrative: A sequence of events organised into a story with a particular structure.

Story: All of the events in a narrative, those presented directly to an audience and those which might be inferred.

G321 Narrative
Opening through the medium of a chat show known as "the Nicole show", the 98 boys are introduced to the audience where throughout one of the main protagonist has flashbacks of the time he spent with his girlfriend. A plot twist occurs when it cuts to the protagonist walking into a hospital to find his girlfriend terminally ill.

G321 Story
A young couple in love, the boyfriend is part of a successful band whilst he is on tour the girlfriend fell ill which consequently affects the boyfriends life and especially his career.

Synopsis:
Harry Ward (Lewis Healy), the guitarist of the well known Band, The 98 Boys, thought the most difficult decision he would have to make is what restaurant to go for dinner. Never did Harry or the rest of the band (Ben King, Orkid Ramekaj, Charlie Harris) ever expect to be so affected by Melody Emily Harris (Megan Hughes). Melody is the love of his life and dedicates all of his songs to her. However, a car wreck changes everything in an instant, and now Melody's life hangs in the balance. Suspended between life and death, Melody faces a choice that will decide her future. Stay with Harry and support his upcoming band The 98 Boys or change give up her life. What will she choose?

We tell the narrative/story in a non-linear order.

Alternative G321 Narrative
We could have started with the film from the perspective of the girlfriend of meeting the protagonist and her struggles when he abandons her to go on tour whilst she has to deal with the fact she has a terminal illness until he returns when he realises

Alternative G321 Story
A young girl and boy develop a relationship. The boy is part of a band, the 98 boys, who have to go on a worldwide tour. Whilst he is away the girlfriend finds out that she has a terminal illness which then affects the boyfriends life and career when he finds out of her dying.

This would be telling the narrative/story in a linear order.

Media Product representation of young people and youth Identity

An example of a Media Product that represents young people and a youth identity and explain what the representation is and how it is created.

90210 is a tv show that represents young people as being reckless as well as struggling with the concepts of growing up such as drugs, alcohol, pregnancy and death. It is created through the narrative of the show. The mise en scene is another factor that contributes to this.
